Since I know everyone wants to read a full race recap- here you go. The Bill Seymour Half Marathon started bright and early at 7:30 on Saturday morning. It was a perfect morning to run 13.1 miles. It was slightly chilly with little wind- AWESOME running weather. I initially signed up to do this race because I wanted to build my mileage up for my Vegas training plan. I had no intentions of having it be "my best race ever" race. In fact on Friday before the race I was nervous I was going to even make it through the thing without making a fool of myself. My training runs have not been pretty. It was too hot and too humid this summer to get any constructive training done. I had only ran one 10 mile run- which was painful and not something I like to do only once. I like to have a couple 10 miles or longer in a plan before a big race.
Okay. back to the race recap. The first six miles flew by I was "rollin'" ( A little Limp Bizkit reference- old school). I was feeling great. I make it to the turn around point and head back- halfway done- YES!
Again I am feeling great, I am flying back my times are great and I realize I might accomplish a goal I have been fighting to make for the last 3 years; a Half Marathon under 2:00. I knew it would be tight but if I kept my pace I MIGHT just make it. Somewhere between Mile 9 and 10 the pain starts to creep in; and with the pain comes the self doubt, the panic of "oh, no can I finish?" My pace slowed way down and mile 11 seemed like it was never going to come. I hate mile 10-11, I swear every race they move the mile 11 marker farther back. The self doubt and the pain in my head were much louder than the Nickelback that was playing in my ipod. The end did eventually come and I crossed the finish line 3 minutes faster than any of my other races. I know I should be happy with that - it is my best time- but in my heart I feel I could have tried harder, ran faster those last 3 miles to get me closer to the 2:00 mark. It is what it is and next up is VEGAS BABY! I really hope to break through the 2:00 curse and see a 1 in the front of my time.
On a side note by dear friends Jenny and Mandy ran the 5k and Jenny improved her time by 6 minutes. That is so impressive I can't even tell you how BIG that is. I am so proud of her! I keep telling her next up a half marathon. She says no....we will see.
Next up that day was the State Fair. I was all set to eat crap and see the sights after all I did just run 13 miles that morning. Thatcher loved all the animal portions. His favorite seemed to be the birthing center. He kept trying to pull himself into the cages with the sheep. I should have just thrown him in there and then had the volunteer hand him back to me when he was done playing.
I did buy a leash for this weekend. I know there are some "leash haters" out there but when you have an active child like Thatcher I thought it was a great idea. Thatcher is a "leash hater" once he realized it was on him he was like a dog chasing somethin on his tail. However, "I am not giving up that easy kiddo."
He started to fade pretty quick that afternoon and didn't want to even eat Cotton Candy. We did make a couple rides but he was started to get crabby and since I couldn't find a fried Twinkie we decided to call it a day. The fair experience didn't go the way I wanted it to but Thatcher did have a good time for most of it and I saved myself some misery by not eating my way through the fair.
On Sunday I shampooed my carpets so we went to Yanney Park so they could dry. Thatcher loved the open spaces and just ran and ran. We took Frankie with us and he is just too much of a "other people's kids, whose parents don't watch them" attraction so we hung out down by the pond. While we were on the beach we did get a small treat and had the swans come really close to where we were at. Thatcher thought that was awesome and I think he would have jumped in if we didn't stop him.
